These queries happen throughout the journey, triggered by a mention from a colleague, a LinkedIn post, a conference, or a previous AI response that included your name.
This is the highest-stakes moment in the research journey because the buyer is actively deciding whether to pursue you further or eliminate you from consideration. And this is where the sourcing pattern changes completely.
The model doesn’t read your case studies or your testimonials page. It reads what customers wrote on third-party platforms and treats that as the authoritative picture of what it’s like to use your product.
77% of buyers read user reviews during their purchasing journey, making this form of social proof significantly more influential than analyst reports, which have seen a 60% decline in usage since 2022. The model reflects that shift directly.
There’s a harder finding in the same research. Competitor-owned pages also appear in these citation packs for mid-market brands. Pages titled “Top 5 Alternatives to [brand],” published by competing vendors, get surfaced when a buyer asks whether your brand is worth purchasing.
An evaluation query about your brand can end with your competitor’s content shaping the conclusion.
What this means for brands:
Your review platform presence is not a reputation management activity. It’s a primary input into what AI models tell buyers about you at the moment they’re deciding whether to continue the conversation.
The volume, recency, and specificity of reviews on G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot are shaping AI responses in real time.
A thin or outdated review record hands the evaluation narrative to whoever does show up. Actively generating fresh, specific reviews from real customers is one of the highest-leverage things a brand can do to influence AI-mediated evaluation.
When the buyer starts with a competitor
This is the scenario most brands haven’t thought through. A buyer researching a competitor will ask “what are the best alternatives to [competitor]” or “what should I use instead of [competitor].”
The model answers by naming options, and your presence in that answer is determined by what the external record says about you in relation to that competitor.
When a buyer is researching a competitor and the model names you as an alternative, that’s new consideration generated entirely through AI, with no prior relationship, no ad impression, no content download. Just an AI response that named you as an option.
What this means for brands:
You need content that explicitly addresses the competitive landscape. If a competitor is known for a specific feature and you have the same capability, or a better version of it, that comparison needs to live on your website in a form the model can find and cite. That doesn’t mean you need to have direct competitor content, but you do need to have clear feature content.
Buyers searching for alternatives to a competitor are often very specific about what they want more or less of.
Brands that have clearly documented how they compare, which use cases they’re better suited for, what customers who switched from that competitor have experienced, are the ones that get named.
By the Time Buyers Reach You, They’ve Already Formed a View
Walk through the full journey and the implication becomes clear.
A buyer discovers your category through an AI-generated list of tools. They evaluate your brand through an AI response.
They research you directly and find either a coherent, credible picture that confirms what they’ve already heard, or a fragmented one that creates doubt. They arrive at your website, book a demo, or take a call with your team already having formed a preliminary view.
42% of buyers have switched brands based on AI recommendations. Those decisions were made before any human interaction. The brand didn’t get a chance to make its case in person. The AI already made it for them, or against them.
Your sales team isn’t starting from zero. They’re confirming or contradicting a picture that AI already built. If that picture is accurate and favorable, every subsequent interaction is easier.
If it’s inaccurate, outdated, or shaped by a competitor’s framing, your team spends the first part of every conversation correcting a narrative they didn’t create.
Start with the Audit, Not the Optimization
The most common mistake brands make is jumping to optimization before understanding the baseline.
They restructure pages, brief PR teams, and publish new content without knowing what the model is currently saying or which sources are driving that narrative.
The audit comes first.
- Open ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
- Run the queries your buyers actually run: the problem-aware queries your category generates, the sentiment queries about your brand, the comparison queries against your main competitors, and the “alternatives to [competitor]” queries where you should be appearing.
- Read the full responses.
- Note which sources are cited, where your brand appears, what the model says about you, and whether any of that matches your actual positioning.
Do this across multiple models because sourcing patterns differ. What ChatGPT says about your brand and what Perplexity says can diverge significantly depending on which sources each weights.
Then check consistency across your own surfaces. AI models pull from your help center, product documentation, blog, press releases, and any other publicly indexed content alongside your homepage.
If your marketing site describes your product one way and your documentation describes it another, the model synthesizes something that matches neither.
The fragmentation that’s invisible inside your organization becomes visible in every AI response about your brand.
Most brands that run this audit find at least one of three things:
- They’re absent from category queries where they should appear
- They’re described inaccurately in evaluation queries
- Or the sources leading the citation pack are ones they’ve never actively managed.
Any of those findings changes what you should prioritize.
What to Do About It
Structure your content around how buyers actually search
AI agents don’t forgive incomplete product specifications or outdated pricing. Unlike human buyers who might call to clarify missing information, AI simply moves to the next supplier with complete, structured data.
Your product pages, use case pages, and comparison content need to answer the specific questions buyers are asking:
- Which integrations do you support
- Which company sizes do you serve
- What does implementation look like
- How pricing works
If that information isn’t on your site in a clear, extractable form, the model can’t use it.
FAQ formats, comparison tables, and structured specifications consistently outperform narrative prose in AI responses because they give the model data it can directly pull into an answer.
Invest in your review platform presence as a strategic priority
For evaluation queries, the moment with the highest purchase intent, third-party review platforms lead AI citation packs consistently. Volume matters, recency matters, and specificity matters.
A review that says “great product” doesn’t give the model much to work with. A review that describes a specific use case, a specific outcome, and a specific comparison to an alternative gives the model the kind of structured information it can cite meaningfully.
Build a systematic process for generating detailed, recent reviews and treat it with the same priority as any other demand generation activity.
Create competitive content that addresses your category directly
Buyers searching for alternatives to your competitors represent warm, in-market demand. Brands that have published clear, honest comparison content, covering what they do better, what they do differently, and what kinds of customers are a better fit, are the ones that get named in those responses.
If your competitor claims a feature you also have, and your website doesn’t clearly document it, the model won’t know to include you.
Build external authority for category-level visibility
Showing up in problem-aware queries, the ones where consideration sets form, requires that the external record establishes you as a relevant player in the category.
Press coverage from credible publications, analyst mentions, original research that other sites reference, and a high volume of quality reviews all feed into how AI models assess category authority.
AI queries tend to be more specific and buyer-oriented, such as “best cybersecurity vendor for mid-size law firms,” and this favors brands with strong topical authority and clean citations.
Brands that publish genuinely useful research, earn media coverage, and accumulate external validation show up in those responses.
Make sure your content is technically accessible to AI crawlers
Most AI crawlers don’t render JavaScript. If your product names, pricing information, feature lists, or comparison tables only appear after client-side rendering, the model can’t see them regardless of how well-written they are.
Critical content needs to be available in the page’s response HTML. This is a technical audit worth running alongside the content audit.

AI is already functioning as an SDR for your category. It’s intercepting buyers early, framing what good looks like, naming the relevant players, and shaping opinions before your team enters the conversation.
The difference between a good SDR and a bad one is whether they’re saying the right things about you.
The brands that win in this environment are the ones that understand AI reflects the quality, consistency, and authority of their external record, and invest accordingly.
